In 1984, the movie Ghostbusters stormed the movie theater with a mix of humor and horror as the motley group of men fought to save the city from a ghostly takeover. The theme song became a popular jingle as people found themselves singing:

If there’s something strange in your neighborhood

Who you gonna call? (Ghostbusters!)

If there’s something weird, and it don’t look good

Who you gonna call? (Ghostbusters!)

When fear, disease, despair, and death enter our lives, we tend to seek ways to find healing and wholeness among our struggles. We may call our doctor, a friend, a counselor, or even our pastor. We want resolution. We want the problem to end. We want someone to carry the load with us. I love the community and resources where we can turn in our heartaches and heartbreaks, while remembering the importance of not limiting ourselves to here and now when we have an eternal physician, friend, counselor, and spiritual leader: Jesus.

In the 1970 Bill and Gloria Gaither praise chorus, There’s Something About that Name, the lyrics invite us to consider the power of Jesus’ name. This song was written during times of crisis and joy in the Gaither’s life. They had watched as their grandparents had died one by one. Then they became first time parents, which was a great joy. One night the child woke with a high fever, and they found themselves speaking the name of Jesus, calling out to the Great Physician.

In Acts 3:16 we read, “By faith in the name of Jesus, this man whom you see and know was made strong. It is Jesus’ name and the faith that comes through him that has completely healed him, as you can all see.” The man who was healed had been crippled from birth. Peter and John spoke the name of Jesus over this man, and he was healed. When the people seek to hold on to Peter and John, Peter points to the power of Jesus’ name.

In our lives, I wonder how often we seek to speak to the situation or call on other people, leaving Jesus on the sidelines in case our way of dealing with the situation does not work. I wonder if we recognize the power of Jesus’ name to transform us and transform our situation.

The end of the song reminds us of the power and authority of Jesus when we sing:

Kings and Kingdoms will all pass away

But there’s something about that name.

So, if there is something that brings fear into your life, who you gonna call? JESUS! If there is sickness in your life, who you gonna call? JESUS! If there are sin and brokenness in your life, who you gonna call? JESUS! There is something about His name that changes us and changes our situation.

Prayer: Jesus! I need your strength when I am weak. I need your hope when I feel despair. I need your healing when I am sick. Thank you that in your name all things are possible. Amen.
